What does a switchboard or fuse box do?

A switchboard or in older buildings a fuse box, plays a crucial role in managing the electrical current flow within a building. It contains circuit breakers or fuses that regulate the electricity circulating through the building's circuits. In the event of an electrical overload, the corresponding circuit breaker or fuse activates, cutting off electricity to a specific segment or even the entire home or building. This safety measure helps prevent potential fire hazards, personal injuries, or fatalities associated with electrical issues.

What Is a Meter Box?

A meter box is a protective enclosure mounted on the external walls of residential and commercial properties. Its primary function is to house and safeguard various electrical components including the electric meter, a crucial device responsible for measuring electrical consumption. Typically, a meter box incorporates a switchboard along with the main switch. While modern installations include the main switch within the meter box, it's noteworthy that older houses might feature a separate switchboard housing the main switch. This essential component ensures the efficient and secure monitoring of electrical usage in a property.

Upgrade Your Switchboard for a Safer Compliant Electrical System

Why Upgrade Your switchboard or fuse box?

When it comes to your electrical system, safety and compliance should be a top priority. Here are some reasons why upgrading your switchboard or fuse box is essential.

Overloading

Old switchboards, especially old fuse boxes with ceramic rewireable fuses, were not designed to cater for today’s high power consumption. If you think about the appliances that were used when your house or building was first built and compare it to now, we are consuming much more electricity. The old switchboards or fuse boxes weren’t designed to take the load that we put on them now and can be potential fire hazards due to overloading. Sometimes these homes and businesses experience nuisance and frequent power tripping and is a clear indicator of an underlying electrical issue that needs prompt assessment.

To Eliminate Fire Hazards or Asbestosis

If your switchboard is located in the meter box and it has an old chipboard backing panel, it poses a fire hazard. Many old fuse boxes or switchboard may even contain asbestos. In this case upgrading to a new switchboard or meter box with a hinged, fire-proof backing panel with circuit breaker switchboard is required and will significantly reduce the risk of fire or Asbestosis. To ensure the safety of your home or business, it is essential that your switchboard complies with current Australian standards and Energex requirements.

Creating Space

When installing new appliances or renovating your home or business you may need to add new circuits or safety switches to your electrical switchboard. If your current switchboard or fuse box does not have enough space for additional circuit breakers or safety switches an upgrade to your switchboard is required to accommodate them.

Safety switches are required

Safety Switches (RCD’s) are essential for protecting you and your loved ones from electrical hazards and are now required on all new final sub circuits, alterations to existing circuits and all final sub-circuits in switchboard upgrades or replacements in residential situations. Most homes are not fitted with safety switches on all circuits but may have a safety switch only on the power circuits. Electrical Results recommends RCBOs (safety switches combined with circuit breakers) where possible for your switchboard upgrade as they provide a more reliable protection than an RCD safety switch. You will have fewer nuisance tripping problems and if tripping occurs you will only lose power to a one circuit instead of many circuits thus avoiding a complete blackout.

Single-Phase to Three-Phase Upgrade

If you require more power for your property or need to accommodate specific appliances or machinery that require three phase power, upgrading your switchboard to a three phase switchboard for additional 3 phase main switches and circuit breakers will facilitate a smooth transition.

Correct Switchboard Location

In some cases, the location of the switchboard may not meet regulatory requirements or may not be easily accessible for routine inspections or maintenance. Relocating and upgrading your switchboard allows for a more suitable and compliant position. Your switchboard must comply with current Australian standards and Energex requirements to ensure connection of power to your home or business premises.

Fuse Boxes don't meet current standards

If your home or business still relies on an outdated fuse box, we highly recommend considering an upgrade to a modern circuit breaker switchboard. Not only does this upgrade enhance the safety but it also provides increased load capacity. The old ceramic fuses used in traditional fuse boxes no longer meet current safety standards. These outdated ceramics pose a fire hazard due to their potential for overload. By upgrading to a modern circuit breaker switchboard, you can rest assured knowing that your home or business is equipped with the latest safety features and can handle the demands of today's electrical needs.

What else should be considered with a switchboard upgrade?

Upgrade Your Mains Cables

It's essential to consider upgrading your mains power when updating your switchboard. This is required when your maximum demand exceeds the current rating of your consumer mains. A mains power upgrade involves the replacing of cables connecting your switchboard to the point of supply. This upgrade allows you to safely utilise more electricity and is crucial to prevent overloading of consumer mains. At Electrical Results, we specialise in complete power upgrades to meet the demands of today's modern world.

Upgrade your Meter Box?

Your meter box must comply with current Australian standards and Energex requirements. Regulations regarding meter box size, shape, construction and location requirements are frequently updated. By upgrading your meter box, you can ensure that you meet the latest regulatory standards, providing peace of mind and avoiding potential penalties.
